The AMA has announced the CPT code set for the third dose of the COVID-19 pediatric Pfizer vaccine. This was effective for use right after the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) expanded the use of a third, primary series dose of the Pfizer vaccine for certain 5 through 11 year old individuals who are immunocompromised.

The CPT code for this third dose is

0073A   Immunization administration by intramuscular injection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, mRNA-LNP, spike protein, preservative free, 10 mcg/0.2 mL dosage, diluent reconstituted, tris-sucrose formulation; third dose (from the American Medical Association website).

In the same FDA announcement on January 3, 2022, they also announced some more changes to the emergency use authorization of the Pfizer vaccine:

  • Shortening the time between completion of the primary vaccination of the Pfizer vaccine and the booster dose to at least 5 months
  • Expanding the use of a single booster dose for 12 through 15 year old individuals.
