The Pfizer-BioNTech Vaccine is now authorized for emergency use for 5 – 11 years old individuals by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This authorization came on October 29, 2021, after members of the Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee had a meeting on this date to discuss a request to make changes to Pfizer-BioNTech’s Emergency Use Authorization of the vaccines for children 5-11 years of age. 17 members voted that yes, the benefits do outweigh the risks when administered at a lower dose, 1 member abstained from voting. It was later officially authorized.

The vaccine will be 2 doses for the primary series, administered 3 weeks apart, but at a lower dosage of 10 micrograms, compared with the 12+ aged individuals who received 30 microgram dosages.
